Farnsworth Wildlife Refuge
The two parcels that make up the Farnsworth Wildlife Refuge were donated in 1979 and 1985 by Sally N. Farnsworth. The 83-acre parcel was donated in 1979, while the remaining 11.33 acres in 1985. Both parcels were donated on the condition that the lands would remain as a natural forest and wildlife sanctuary. Its use is confined to promoting study and enjoyment of natural history and especially to teaching both young people and adults about the conservation of natural resources. Selective timber cutting is done on occasion to preserve the natural beauty of the area with the funds used to maintain and improve the area for its stated purpose, including acquisition of realty or interests lying within the Town.
The Farnsworth Wildlife Refuge lies within the Petapawag ACEC and is designated “Critical Natural Landscape” and partially “Core Habitat”. The parcels abut property owned by the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and are across from the English Wildlife Refuge.
The property is bounded by Woodward Brook on the north.
Access is from Elbow Meadow Wildlife Refuge in Tyngsboro.
